Indigenous Roots

Indigenous Roots

I am a registered member of the Miawpukek Band and currently reside off reserve in Central Alberta. My Indigenous status comes from my father, who was raised in Miawpukek Mi”kamawey Mawi”omi, Conne River, Micmac Territory. My mother is also Metis. I have worked 25 of my 31 years in the Calgary Urban Indigenous Community.  I hold a Social Work Diploma, Degree (BSW) and completed graduate studies at the University of Calgary in 1998. My graduate degree Specialization: Communities, Management & Policies (International). I have a master’s degree (MSW), registered, licensed and certified as a Mental Health Therapist with The Alberta College of Social Workers (RSW).  I am licensed to provide Restricted Psychosocial Interventions and have been an Adjunct Professor supervising Field Education for Mount Royal College, University of Calgary BSW, MSW and Clinical MSW students, and York Ville Counselling Psychology students for 18 years.

In 1998, there were no Indigenous specializations in Social Work, so I focused on International Indigenous peoples from all over the world. I wrote my dissertation on “The Redesigning of First Nation Children’s Services” using a holistic approach on a macro level, and celebrated with 2 graduation round dances, blanket ceremonies and received honorary graduation eagle feathers for each degree, that I have used in many Indigenous ceremonies over the past 31 years.

On our Reservation, my great grandmother was our community’s midwife, the health center is named after her as she delivered over 400 children and healed others when sick.  My grandfather was Chief and nominated honorary chief for life. My Auntie was also the Chief. I am a fourth-generation human services professional in my nuclear family.  I am also proud of my Indigenous and Metis lineage and cultures.
